If one were to describe what is neck pain, it is likely pain and stiffness experienced in the neck area below the head. While it is very common, this should not always be taken lightly as it could be a symptom of underlying medical conditions or injuries. The neck consists of ligaments, bones and muscles of which strain to any can cause neck pain.

The type of pain also ranges based on the causes of the neck pain. A burning and sharp pain or persistent aches could indicate different treatments required. As the neck is just below the head, any pain in the neck could lead to headaches. Read on to learn about the common causes of neck pain and how to get rid of that pain in the neck!

Causes of Neck Pain in Seniors

There could be many things which cause neck pain and old age could exacerbate some of these causes of neck pain, causing discomfort for seniors.

Muscle Strains

A strained feeling in the neck could be caused by something as simple as a muscle strain at the neck area. This could be due to a poor sleeping posture or even turning the neck albeit at a wrong angle. With age, muscle fibres become less dense which increases the likelihood of injury and soreness. While seemingly harmless, a muscle strain could develop into something more serious, resulting in pain and limited movement if left untreated.

Poor Posture

As one ages, a hunched over posture where one has the tendency to lean forward becomes more common. When one stoops forward, it increases the risk of falls as the centre of gravity has shifted forward. With the alignment of the neck and spine being off, it leads to discomfort around the neck region. Seniors are also more prone to experiencing joint pain due to wear and tear from old age and hence are more likely to sit for prolonged periods of time. This causes the neck muscles and tissues to tighten up, causing pain.

Ageing

Degenerative conditions that are a natural part of ageing can cause neck pain. Arthritis refers to swelling and inflammation of the joints. Cervical spondylosis, also known as arthritis of the neck, is the medical term for these age-related, wear-and-tear changes that occur over time. These conditions cause discomfort and tension in the neck region which can impact one’s quality of life if left untreated.

Stress

Increased stress levels are commonly associated with the tensing of muscles and this can lead to neck pain. The neck and shoulder region over time becomes tense and stiff due to prolonged stress one is facing. Here are some strategies to cope with fatigue and to manage stress.

Managing Neck Pain

Neck stretches. Neck stretches can help release some tension and ease the neck pain one is feeling. This subsequently would increase the range of motion for the neck. Furthermore, neck stretches are usually low impact and easy to do in the comfort of one’s home with minimal equipment needed. When in doubt, always consult a doctor before attempting any exercises and stop when you experience discomfort.

Practise good posture. Keep your shoulders aligned and your back straight when seated to keep the neck and spine aligned.

Pain medications such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirin can help in pain relief. Additionally, your doctor might prescribe topical anaesthetic creams containing camphor or menthol to provide temporary relief to muscle and joint pain.

Conclusion

While the occasional neck pain may not be a cause for concern, if left untreated, the consequence of neck pain may lead to prolonged inability to go about activities of daily living. Over time, physical and mental wellness would be negatively impacted due to the discomfort and frustration from neck pain. As caregivers, it is important to also understand the causes of your loved one’s neck pain so you could seek the most appropriate treatment before it escalates and impacts other aspects of life.
