“When to Consider Home Nursing Services – A Singapore Caregiver’s Story”

by | Jun 13, 2025 | Caregivers Concern, Caregiving

Back in 2024, Jill received a call from the hospital that her dad had suffered from a stroke and collapsed at home. Jill never imagined that the day that she would have to be her dad’s caregiver would come so early. To Jill, her Father was the rock of the family – the ever strong provider. While he recovered and was discharged in a week, it was the after care process that was challenging.

It was confusing and frustrating for both Jill and her dad to have to watch him struggle with basic tasks such as buttoning his shirt and slurring in his speech. At some point in time, Jill knew that she had to take time off work to ensure that her dad recovers well. It was too much at one point in time having to balance caregiving duties with work and caring for her young twin boys.

The wake-up call came when Jill received an alert from the fall detection system installed at home that her dad had suffered from a fall and she rushed back from her grocery run. Thankfully, dad was not badly hurt. That was when Jill decided that she needed help – she reached out to various home nursing providers and finally narrowed down on one for her dad.

For Jill, this was life changing. Professional help meant that her dad’s condition would be well-managed by an expert and that he was treated with dignity, something that was hard for Jill and her dad to manage when she tried to care for him.

The nurse dressed his wound from pressure sores, monitored his blood pressure and explained his stroke medications in a comprehensible manner. These were amongst the many ways the nurse took care of her dad. More importantly, the nurse treated her dad with such respect. She spoke to him in simple Mandarin, always asking for his permission before anything. For a proud man like him, that meant everything.

So when should you consider home nursing services?

Ask yourselves these questions:

  • Is my loved one’s health condition stable or worsening?
  • Do I feel confident managing their care at home alone?
  • Are there medical tasks I’m uncomfortable doing?
  • Is caregiving affecting my physical or emotional health?

If you answer yes to one or more of these, it is highly encouraged to explore home nursing services to get expert care in the comfort of your own home

When family caregivers are burnt out

Caregiver burnout is a common effect of caregiving – be it the physical or emotional demands, this can lead to negative repercussions not only for the caregiver but also for the care recipient. One might experience feelings of stress, anxiety and end up losing sleep or neglecting their own health in the process. Home nursing provides respite and a peace of mind while ensuring professional care for your loved one.

When palliative or end-of-life care is needed

Palliative or end-of-life care is an intricate process and is one of the most emotionally challenging periods for both the patient and their loved ones. Palliative and end-of-life care focus on improving quality of life. Home nursing services include administration of pain and symptom management, wound management and emotional support through this journey.

After a hospital stay or surgery

If your loved one is recovering from surgery, a stroke, or a hospitalisation due to illness, they may need wound care, medication management, monitoring of vital signs and assistance with rehabilitation. A home nurse can ease that transition back to home, ensuring that the patient is comfortable and well taken care of.

When medical needs become complex

Chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or respiratory issues often require more concerted care. A home nurse can administer regular injections or IV therapy, glucose monitoring or care for an ongoing wound/bed sore. When these tasks become too arduous for family members, a home nurse steps in to fill this gap.

When there’s a high risk of falls or injuries

For those prone to falling or have mobility limitations, a home nurse can ensure their safety, assist with activities of daily living such as bathing. Having a professional administer this care gives caregivers some respite and a peace of mind.

Conclusion

Caring for an aging loved one is a deeply personal journey—one that often comes with tough decisions about how to ensure their health, safety, and quality of life. For many families, home nursing services become an essential support system, allowing seniors to receive professional care while remaining in the comfort of their own homes.
