How To Best Manage Arthritis Pain

by | Jul 19, 2024 | Community, Lifestyle & Wellness, Resources

Before we go about finding ways to relieve arthritis pain, it is key we understand what causes this pain and factors that typically trigger it. This way, through identification of the root causes, it allows us to better manage the condition by using the most apt treatment for the condition.

Arthritis is the swelling and tenderness of one or more joints. The main symptoms of arthritis are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age. Before we go about seeking treatment, it is important to understand what are the different types of arthritis before seeking the appropriate treatment. When in doubt, always consult your physician to determine the best course of action.

Types of Arthritis

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a condition that can happen to anyone but is perhaps more commonplace in seniors as the joint cartilage undergoes wear and tear. The cartilage is this connective tissue between our joints that allow for seamless movement and most importantly, being pain-free.

Rheumatoid arthritis

This is an autoimmune disease that happens when the immune system attacks its own tissues, causing pain and inflammation of joints. Whilst there is no cure, early detection and treatment can help with the management of the condition.

How to best manage arthritis pain?

Stay active

At first thought, some might think of this as being contradictory – the thought of exercising with joint pain does not sound appealing at all. However, physical activity need not always be high intensity in nature and a physician would be able to recommend the type of exercises one can do based on their condition. For more severe conditions, doing static stretches at home, going on easy walks are ways to at least get in some movement for the day. Keeping active not only helps in pain management, keeping the joints healthy but also bodes well for mental health. As caregivers, one can accompany the care recipient in doing these exercises and even doing the exercise together.

Heat and cold treatments

Hot and cold treatments can help in temporary pain relief and are options to consider.  Hot compress can include that of soaking in warm water, heat packs, shining an electric heater on the injured area. The heat helps to improve circulation and hence blood flow to the affected area which can reduce the discomfort.

On the other hand, cold therapy such as ice and gel packs can provide relief for inflammation and is suitable for both Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid arthritis. One note of caution is that these treatments should never be applied to bare skin as it might cause burns.

Topical medications

Gels, patches and creams that are applied to the skin numbs the nerve ending close to the skin. These medications have an anti-inflammatory effect by targeting the joint fluid and decreasing inflammatory proteins.

Weight management

Extra weight puts more pressure on the joints and shedding those extra kilos helps to reduce the pressure, hence increasing mobility and reducing further joint damage.

Conclusion

If the pain is bearable and somewhat manageable, it is best to leave pill prescriptions as one of the final resort when it comes to dealing with pain. Over-the-counter and pain medicines are helpful but tend to come with side effects. Remember, when in doubt, always approach a physician before taking any medications or undertaking any new exercises that you’re unsure of.
