Living with a stoma, whether due to colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy, can be a significant adjustment for seniors. However, with proper care and attention, individuals can maintain a high quality of life. Stoma care involves a series of routines and practices to ensure the stoma remains healthy and complication-free. This comprehensive guide outlines essential steps and tips for seniors to care for their stoma effectively.

Understanding the Stoma

A stoma is a surgically created opening on the abdomen that allows bodily waste, such as stool or urine, to exit the body. It appears as a pink or red protrusion and is usually round or oval-shaped. Understanding the type of stoma (colostomy, ileostomy, or urostomy) and its function is crucial for proper care.

Supplies Needed
  1. Ostomy pouches: Available in one-piece or two-piece systems, these pouches collect waste and adhere to the skin surrounding the stoma.
  2. Stoma powder: Helps absorb moisture and protect the skin.
  3. Skin barrier wipes/sprays: Forms a protective layer on the skin to prevent irritation.
  4. Ostomy scissors: Used for cutting ostomy pouches to fit the stoma size.
  5. Gentle soap and water: For cleaning the stoma and surrounding skin.
  6. Soft towels or disposable wipes: Dry the stoma area after cleaning.

Daily Care Routine
  1. Cleanliness is paramount. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after stoma care to prevent infection.
  2. Gently remove the old ostomy pouch by peeling it away from the skin. Avoid pulling or tugging, as this can irritate you.
  3. Clean the skin around the stoma with warm water and mild, unscented soap. Pat the area dry with a soft towel or disposable wipes.
  4. Inspect the stoma for any signs of irritation, redness, or discharge. Contact your healthcare provider if you notice any abnormalities.
  5. Measure and cut the opening of a new ostomy pouch to precisely fit your stoma’s size. Ensure a snug but comfortable fit to prevent leaks.
  6. If the skin is moist or irritated, apply stoma powder. This helps absorb excess moisture and promote healing.
  7. Place the adhesive part of the ostomy pouch over the stoma and press firmly to ensure a secure seal. Smooth out any wrinkles or creases to prevent leakage.
  8. Dispose of the used ostomy supplies in a sealable plastic bag.
  9. Monitor the stoma for any size, colour, or output changes throughout the day. Note any concerns and discuss them with your healthcare provider.

Tips for Seniors
  1. Stay hydrated to maintain healthy stoma output. Drink plenty of water unless otherwise advised by your healthcare provider.
  2. Eat a balanced, fibre-rich diet to regulate bowel movements and prevent constipation or diarrhoea.
  3. Avoid harsh chemicals, perfumes, or lotions near the stoma, as they can irritate.
  4. Keep spare ostomy supplies readily available, especially when travelling or leaving home for extended periods.
  5. Seek support from stoma nurses, support groups, or online communities to share experiences and gain valuable insights.
  6. Stay active and engage in gentle exercises to promote overall well-being and prevent complications such as hernias.
  7. Review your stoma care routine with your healthcare provider to ensure it meets your evolving needs.

With the proper knowledge and support, caring for a stoma can be a manageable and empowering experience for seniors. By following a consistent stoma care routine, staying vigilant for any changes or concerns, and seeking assistance, seniors can maintain optimal stoma health and enjoy a fulfilling lifestyle. Remember, your healthcare team is there to provide guidance and support every step of the way.
