In recent months, monkeypox has emerged as a public health concern, particularly affecting vulnerable populations such as seniors. Understanding the disease’s transmission and prevention strategies is crucial for safeguarding our health.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions on the body. Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease related to smallpox, primarily found in Central and West Africa. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that can resemble smallpox. While generally less severe than smallpox, it can still lead to serious complications, especially for those with underlying health conditions.
Monkeypox spreads through contact with an infected person’s lesions, bodily fluids, or respiratory droplets. It can also be transmitted via contaminated materials like clothing or bedding. Given the higher health risks of age, seniors must be particularly vigilant.
Singapore has a strong public health infrastructure, allowing for effective monitoring of infectious diseases like monkeypox. Despite the World Health Organisation (WHO) declaring mpox a global public health emergency on Aug 14, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said the immediate public health risk of the outbreak in Africa to Singapore is assessed to be low. The Ministry of Health (MOH) is actively updating the public and implementing precautionary measures. For real-time updates, refer to The Straits Times.
If any of these symptoms arise, especially after potential exposure, seniors should seek medical advice promptly for timely diagnosis and treatment.
As monkeypox cases rise, seniors must stay informed and proactive to protect their health. We can effectively navigate this public health challenge by implementing simple preventive measures and keeping up with credible sources like The Straits Times.
Growing Needs grew out of our own encounters with caring for our aging parents and reflecting on the Growing Needs that we ourselves would face as we advance in years. We hope to build a community that will learn, share and contribute towards caring for the growing needs of our loved ones.
