Why experiences, Not Things Hold The Key To Happiness

by | Oct 21, 2024 | Lifestyle & Wellness, Wellness

How happiness looks to one might look vastly different to another. Different things can even evoke different feelings in 2 individuals who have roughly similar views on happiness. Experiences bring feelings of joy and so do things such as material goods. So why is there often the comparison on which is the key to happiness – should you chase after experiences or pursue things? While the best case scenario is to of course do both but if you had to choose one, studies over the decades have shown that happiness from experiences tend to be more long-lived and genuine in nature.

So how does happiness look to you?

(A) Experiences often bring about higher levels of happiness which last longer and are more genuine in nature

(B) Things bring higher levels of instant gratification but often wanes over time

(A) Experiences often bring about higher levels of happiness which last longer and are more genuine in nature

The main thing about experiences is the fact that it facilitates connection with others. Meaningful interactions and relationships with other humans are crucial to happiness and well-being.

Experiences with those you love – it doesn’t always have to be heart fluttering romance. It can be those who live with you, family, friends and even animals. Good relationships keep us happier and healthier. The quality of our relationships is directly proportional to the quality of life.

Spiritual and religious experiences – People who have meaning and purpose in their lives are happier, feel more in control and get more out of what they do. By believing in something greater than themselves, it may help them stay positive in times of sadness, and foster resilience in its role as a coping strategy.

Trying and challenging experiences – Tough situations make one stronger and this experience even though not the most ideal type can go a long way in making one a happier person as we mature and grow.

(B) Things bring higher levels of instant gratification but often wanes over time

Things or material purchases while bringing happiness, it is observed that these happiness are more short lived in nature as compared to that of experiences. Being human, comparison is normal and is a slippery never ending slope once you go down that hole. Comparing a friend’s new bag might make you question if your purchase is as good or even work the opposite effect, making you question yourself if you could have saved the money and got something more wallet friendly.

Conclusion

Experiences > things are not a universal truth. Every individual places different values on different things which brings about different levels of satisfaction.

How one derives satisfaction stems from what is important to them, what drives them and what makes them happy. For some, working towards owning a particular item motivates them and brings happiness when they are finally able to own that item.

Instead of seeing these as being mutually exclusive, think about how things can enhance your future experiences. For example, investing in a car can bring you and your family on road trips which can create unforgettable experiences.
