Speech therapy treatment for seniors

by | Jun 24, 2024 | Healthcare & Rehabilitation, Services

For patients that suffer from speech impairment, speech therapists can conduct assessments and therapy in the areas of communication and swallowing disorders before making appropriate recommendations.

There are many facets to speech impairment and it is often not just “being unable to speak well”. It could include speech impairment, language and communication problems, swallowing and eating problems. Here, we break down what constitutes speech therapy and options seniors can consider!

What is speech therapy treatment?

Speech Therapists are involved in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of communication and swallowing disorders.

They also work with patients to restore and improve their ability to communicate, feed or swallow and provide a comprehensive treatment management plan addressing these difficulties so as to improve their overall quality of life.

St Luke’s eldercare

For seniors, Speech difficulties can happen as a result of stroke and Parkinson’s Disease, making day-to-day communication challenging. Their Loud Speech Group Therapy programme is specifically designed by their Speech Therapists to allow elders to practice speech techniques together in a fun and engaging way.

There are a total of 12 sessions and each session goes at S$12 per session.

Dynamics Therapy Group

Dynamics Therapy Group recognises that speech impairment is a multi-faceted issue and includes conditions such as dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), stuttering and speech disorder. Additionally, they have a “No waitlist” policy as they recognise the frustrations of long waiting times, thus hiring more therapists to meet demand from clients.

A single session (1 hour) goes at S$190 per session, something to consider for those who want to try it out before committing to a longer term package. For those who are ready to commit to a package, the package of 10 therapy sessions goes at S$171 per session.

NTUC Health

Speech therapy at NTUC Health focuses on exercising the face, mouth, and throat muscles to improve the ability to swallow and speak. Seniors living with conditions such as dementia, stroke and Parkinson’s Disease may find it difficult to speak or swallow, thereby putting them at risk of choking, or being unable to communicate their needs.

What we like about NTUC Health is that their speech therapists are able to provide speech therapy in Hokkien and Cantonese, catering to seniors who are more comfortable with dialects.

What to expect?

The trained speech therapists will request information, including medical history, current concerns, and other relevant details from caregivers. The therapist will then conduct an examination to assess clients’ speech, language, oromotor, and swallowing and speaking ability. Based on the assessment, the speech therapists will offer initial recommendations including exercises and caregiver training where relevant.

Review and Discussion:

At the end of the session, the speech therapist will initiate a conversation with the client and caregiver on the planned therapy. This includes discussing established goals and the recommended frequency of therapy sessions.
