An Integrated Shield (IP) Plan supplements the existing MediShield Life plan that covers all Singaporeans and Permanent residents (PRs). IP is not compulsory and can be seen as more of an add on. A total of 2.9 million people here, or more than 70 per cent, have signed up with one of seven insurers offering such coverage.
While MediShield Life is managed by the Central Provident Fund Board, the IP component is managed by selected private insurers in Singapore to cover your treatments in private hospitals, public hospital Class A or Class B1 wards.
These private insurers provide extra protection or riders to cover the deductibles and coinsurance. Do note that you will have to absorb the premiums for these with cash and won’t be able to tap into MediSave.

When choosing medical insurance, one should consider both affordability and the likelihood of needing such coverage, taking into account the trade-offs with reduced disposal income.
