International Caregivers Day is celebrated in November to commend and give gratitude to our caregivers. This dedication serves as a heartfelt appreciation for the indispensable contributions made by them against the growing demands of Singapore.
The Growing Importance of Caregivers in Singapore
As Singapore faces the imminent challenges of an ageing population, the role of caregivers has become increasingly vital. According to the Ministry of Health, the number of seniors aged 65 and above is expected to double by 2030. Greater demand and need for caregivers are constantly growing to support our seniors in Singapore.
Celebrating Singapore’s Unsung Heroes
International Caregivers Day offers an opportunity for the Singaporean community to come together and express gratitude for the unwavering efforts of our caregivers. Recognising their commitment is essential to fostering a culture of appreciation and support.
Government Initiatives and Support
Singapore realises the importance of caregivers concerning the well-being of our seniors. Various initiatives and support systems are in place to assist caregivers, including financial aid, counselling services, and training programs. A recent announcement states that Singapore’s government will be increasing caregiver’s training grants to $400 per year. Starting in 2024, Caregivers will also be able to tap on their SkillsFuture credits to pay for eligible caregivers to aid in reducing the strain on their expenses.
By recognising the diverse roles of caregivers and acknowledging the challenges they face, Singapore can work towards building a more supportive and sustainable caregiving infrastructure. As the nation continues to age, the contributions of caregivers become increasingly invaluable, making it essential to support and encourage Singaporeans to take on caregiver opportunities. Growing Needs grew out of our own encounters with caring for our aging parents and reflecting on the Growing Needs that we ourselves would face as we advance in years. We hope to build a community that will learn, share and contribute towards caring for the growing needs of our loved ones.
