NTUC FairPrice, Singapore’s largest supermarket chain, has pledged to absorb the forthcoming 1 per cent GST increase for select daily essentials during the first half of 2024. This initiative aims to mitigate the impact of the tax hike on Singaporeans. This scheme will cover 500 essential items, such as rice, fresh fruits and vegetables, and toilet paper.
FairPrice Group (FPG) unveiled the plan on Nov 27, positioning it as a measure to support Singaporeans facing challenges amid persistent inflation and an unprecedented surge in the cost of living. Starting Jan 1, 2024, the goods and services tax (GST) rate is set to rise from 8% to 9%, marking the second phase of a two-stage rate hike that commenced on Jan 1, 2023.
The covered items in the scheme are products frequently purchased by the supermarket chain’s customers, encompassing national and house brand items across various categories like fresh produce, staples, dairy, meat, paper products, detergents, and household cleaners. How Can Seniors Start Preparing?
Seniors can start planning their grocery list, like buying non-perishable items to stock up, for example, toilet paper and rice. Seniors often require various non-food items to support their well-being and daily living. Personal care essentials like shampoo, toothpaste, and toiletries are crucial, along with incontinence products and first aid supplies. Cleaning supplies like detergents, handwash, laundry pods, bathroom aids, and assistive devices like magnifying glasses and hearing aids are essential. While we want to reduce our cost of living, be mindful not to hoard unnecessary amounts that prevent others from getting their goods!
Seniors have an extra reason to smile as FairPrice generously absorbs the 1% GST increase on essential items for the first half 2024. With 500 everyday items covered, including fresh produce and household essentials, seniors can easily navigate the rising cost of living. FairPrice’s thoughtful initiatives and long-standing support allow seniors to purchase their daily necessities without compromise. The supermarket chain continues to be a reliable companion, offering a helping hand to seniors during these times of economic adjustments.
